After the winter we have had and our official drought, I didn't think I would be writing a blog on rain and floods! But finally we had some. It reminded me of snow in the UK - one day's rain here in the desert causes chaos with blocked roads, floods and powerlines down!  Being near the mountains, a great deal of water rushes down the various ravines and canyons into the city and the streets have deep kerbs and wide gulleys to channel the water. A huge wide depression runs through the area called the Wash which is dry for much of the year but runs like a river when it rains and often overflows onto the roads.

No irrigation needed today!
The Wash - most of the year

One of the mountain gulleys leading to the Wash
Our link to the interstate - still blocked three days later - this is mud washed across the road
One other result of the rain is snow on the mountain tops for the first time this winter. Quite picturesque but I have no intention of venturing up the tram to play snowballs! I'm staying down here in the sun that has thankfully returned!

  1. That last picture is a stunner! I hope the clean-up is speedy.
