Ian's Watercolours

Just updated this page April 2017 with a fresh selection of my artwork. I have now been painting for about five years, have won some awards and sold a few pictures which is always welcome. Here in Palm Springs, I am a member of the Desert Art Center where my paintings are for sale in the gallery.  I am also a member of the 200 strong Coachella Valley Watercolor Society a vibrant and very active club that runs demonstrations and  events from autumn to spring.

My paintings are for sale! Sizes are for the painted image itself. Prices are for the images unframed but mounted within a mat.  21in x 14in images fit in a mat 28in x 20 and 14in x 10in images  are generally matted to 20in x 16in, both of which fit standard frames. Shipping additional.

If you have  read the rest of my blog you'll know that I have spent many years as a professional horticulturalist, growing and studying plants and designing gardens, so it is not surprising that my artwork expresses this life-long love of all things floral. My paintings are not botanical studies but are nevertheless accurate; flowers will have the correct number of petals and appropriate leaves. However I will admit to creative license, enhancing colours, exaggerating leaf shapes and generally creating flowers that are perhaps a bit bigger and bolder than their living counterparts.

Originating from the UK I have inevitably been influenced by British artists. My initial inspiration came from Rita Mitchell, a local Nottingham artist who stood and painted in one of the gardens I had designed many years ago – I was transfixed and determined to paint. I have since been inspired by the work of other watercolorists, especially Charles Reid and the legendary John Singer Sargent.

Regularly paint with my friend Jim Nelson whose work you can see on Jim's Facebook page.
